BSSC Burning Bright for Breast Cancer Swim-a-thon
via SNAP Burlington
December 2, 2011
During the month of October the Burlington Synchronized Swimming Club (BSSC), in partnership with Synchro Ontario and the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, participated in the Burning Bright for Breast Cancer Fundraising Campaign. Athletes raised money by selling popcorn, Pampered Chef products, hosting a BBQ and gathering pledges for the swim-a-thon.
The BSSC also held a swim-a-thon at McMaster pool & Centennial pool. Athletes took one-hour shifts during which they swam laps, and assisted in keeping the Burning Bright for Breast Cancer torch lit.
To date the Club has raised $4,906.84 and counting, for the Campaign. In appreciation of their fundraising efforts, the girls celebrated with a Pink Party featuring all things PINK!

Bring a Friend Day was a hit!
by Elly Van Fleet

November 27, 2011
Burlington Synchronized Swimming Club hosted another Bring a Friend day on November 27th at Centennial Pool in Burlington. As always the event was filled with friends and fun!

The event was a huge hit with 60 participants! What a great turnout of young swimmers who came to try synchro with their friends for the first time. It was a fun event where the new swimmers were able to try out some fun synchro skills. They make up some deckwork to music, they tried swimming underwater, going upside down, somersaulting and even using equipment like bottles to try some harder skills in the pool. The current BSSC recreational swimmers showed off their talents to their friends with flare!

This event couldn't take place without the coaches and volunteers who make it happen. It is always a huge undertaking with the amount of swimmers that attend in such a short period of time and I would like to thank all of the coaches and volunteers who came to help out, especially the Blue, White and Masters team for swimming for the crowd!

We hope to see more new faces in the spring for our next Bring a Friend day!

Another successful season is officially on the books for the Burlington Synchronized Swimming Club (BSSC).

BSSC is comprised of approximately 50 competitive swimmers ranging in age from seven to masters (18 and up).

The club boasts a provincial stream of swimmers who compete in Ontario, a national stream who compete against clubs from all across the country, and a recreational stream that is made up of over 150 swimmers.

“I couldn’t be happier with the way our club performed this season,” said Head Coach Jennifer Scott.  “All of our athletes have worked very hard and we have celebrated significant improvements as a club.”

BSSC’s provincial program had fantastic results this season, capturing multiple team, duet, and individual podium finishes.

The club’s 10 and Under team placed second at West Regional Championships in early March, and sixth at Trillium Championships in early June. Several members of the team also captured medals in other events, including Tabitha Mirza (Burlington, Ont.) who secured silver for her individual figure score at West Regionals, and Emma McCartney (Oakville, Ont.) and Erin Demopolis (Burlington, Ont.) who won bronze in duet at West Regionals, and also placed fourth in duet at Trilliums.

Both of BSSC’s 11-12 year old teams were successful at West Regionals, with the “Blue Team” securing the bronze medal and the “Red Team” placing sixth.  Blue team member Emma Fox (Waterdown, Ont.) also placed fifth in individual figures at the meet.  Fox and teammate Adele Arpino (Hamilton, Ont.) also qualified to swim at the Ontario Provincial Team Trials in May at the Gretzky Centre in Brantford.  Arpino preswam figures and the routine set for the meet and Fox competed amongst 20 of the province’s best 12 and under swimmers.

BSSC’s 14 year old provincial team also medalled at West Regionals with a bronze and placed sixth overall at the Ontario Age Group Championships in May. The 16-20 team just missed the podium with a fourth place finish at West Regionals, and the masters team picked up the club’s first gold.  The maters team also went on to collect a bronze medal in Peterborough at the Masters Provincial Championship in May..

BSSC’s two national stream teams also had great successes this season.

Emily Newton (Oakville, Ont.), Candice Larochelle (Burlington, Ont.), Jaye Webster (Oakville, Ont.) and Georgena Hill (Mississauga, Ont.) of the 13-15 national team captured third through sixth place at West Regionals in the figure competition.  Newton, Webster and alternate Rachel Hisey (Burlington, Ont.) swam to bronze in the duet category and Larochelle and Hill were right behind them in fourth.  Ashley Bowers (Burlington, Ont.) picked up another bronze medal for BSSC in the solo competition.

The 13-15 team continued their strong performances into Ontario Age Group Championships, as Newton placed fifth in figures, and collected another bronze in duet with Webster. The team then topped off the year with the bronze medal at the Canadian Espoir Championships in Gatineau at the beginning of June, for their combo routine.

BSSC’s Junior National Team, (ages 16-18), also had a great season. At the Provincial Championships in February, Julie Taylor (Mississauga, Ont.) qualified to swim at the Ontario Provincial Team Trials in May. At West Regionals, swimmers Monique Garon (Burlington, Ont.) and Caitlin Menczel (Burlington, Ont.) won the silver medal for their duet. The team also traveled to Calgary for in April for the Canadian Open Championship and capped the season with a fifth place finish in the brand new thematic combo routine category at Trillium Championships.

Swimming continues this summer for two athletes from BSSC who have been selected for Ontario Provincial Teams. Tabitha Mirza (Burlington, Ont.) secured herself a spot on the 10 & under provincial training squad, and will attend a special high performance camp in August. Julie Taylor (Mississauga, Ont.) was selected for Team Ontario’s Junior Team, and will be training with them into July.  The junior team’s season will peak in Honolulu, Hawaii where they will be competing at the US Open from July 11-15.

Despite the competitive season being over, the club will be jumping right into our summer programming and invites you to join us this summer in one of our three great summer camps!

Our AquaSquirts camps are play-based water orientation programs that help develop swimming skills while having FUN! Swimmers ages 4-6 will make friends while jumping, rolling, spinning, twisting and turning upside down – all in the water.

The AquaFun Synchro Camp is a fun and exciting opportunity for new and experienced recreational swimmers, ages seven and up, to participate in a unique sporting experience.  Swimmers will have a blast learning technical synchro skills, making new friends and being introduced to a variety of activities such as diving, hip-hop, yoga, belly dancing and crafts.

Our Pre-Season Training Camp offers swimmers with all levels of synchro experience a week of fun and challenge while they get ready for fall training.  In addition to synchro skill development and physical conditioning, athletes will participate in cross-training opportunities like dance, drama, yoga and team building activities.

Join us this summer! For session dates and camp prices, please visit the Burlington Synchronized Swimming Club website at www.burlingtonsynchro.com.

The Burlington Synchronized Swimming Club (BSSC) brought home a total of nine medals (one gold, four silver, and four bronze) from the recent Western Regional Synchronized Swimming Championship. The meet, held April 2-3 at the Waterloo Memorial Swimplex in Waterloo, hosted six clubs and hundreds of athletes from across Western Ontario.

Several Flamborough athletes are included on the BSSC roster: Waterdown sisters Sarah and Emma Fox, who attend Allan A. Greenleaf Elementary School, have been swimming with the club for the past three years; seven-year-old Cassidi Clairmont of Carlisle has been with BSSC since 2008 and Waterdown resident Kadie Johnson, has been swimming with the club for six years.

Highlights from the regional meet include a silver finish by Tabitha Mirza in the 10 and under category and a bronze medal by Emily Newton in the 14-year-old category.

In team competition, BSSC’s 10 and under squad and 11-12-year-old team swam to silver while the 14-year-old team collected bronze and the masters (18+) team won gold.

BSSC duets were also highly successful as Emma Macartney and Erin Demopolis placed third in the 10 and under duet,  Newton and Jaye Webster collected another bronze in the 13-15 duet, and Monique Garon and Caitlyn Menczel won silver in the 16-20 duet.

In solo competition, Ashley Bowers placed third in the 13-15 category.

BSSC also had a slew of top-10 finishes in all the events entered, including fifth place for Emma Fox’s individual figures.

“It was a very successful meet for the athletes and coaches. It is great to see the hours of dedication and hard work paying off in good results,” said head coach Jennifer Scott.

“I’m looking forward to our athletes continued results into the end of the season, and equally strong results at the upcoming Age Group Championships in May,” she added.

Synchro Club's Annual Rec Extravaganza Saturday
via The Burlington Post
April 8, 2011

The largest recreational synchronized swim meet in the province will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at Centennial Pool. The fifth annual Rec Extravaganza, hosted by the Burlington Synchronized Swimming Club, will feature more than 150 swimmers  from ages 5-and-older to masters (20-older) from all over Ontario.

The meet allows beginner swimmers who have been participating in recreational programs to test their skills against other clubs and get an understanding of what’s involved in competitive synchro swimming.

It also allows more experienced swimmers who have chosen to stay in the recreational stream to enjoy low-key competition. Swimmers will participate in individual compulsory skills, or figure testing, as well as team and duet routine competition.

Members of the public are welcome to witness what the BSSC can offer to parents looking for an artistic,  athletic sport for their daughters.

Admission costs $3 a person or $10 per family, with tickets available at the door.

Centennial Pool is located beside Robert Bateman High School at 5151 New St.

The non-profit, volunteer-run club has been offering synchro swim instruction for more than 40 years.
